Artistic Philosophy

What do I believe performance is meant for?

As a performing artist creativity is the foundation of my work. Performance matters to me because it gives me the opportunity to show off who I am in the right way. It's a creative way to educate, entertain and inform audiences. I believe everyone should have the freedom and opportunity to be creative whether that's performing or being an audience member.

If I had never been to see pantomimes and musicals from a young age it may never have given me the inspiration to do what I do now. Opening the door for the new generation of artists and performers is one of the most significant parts we play as members of such an undervalued community. This is why one day I hope to teach on day…

What kinds of works have inspired me throughout my creative journey?

Key influences in my creative pathway have been musicals. I always resonated with them because I too sometimes burst into song in real life much like most other people. My favourite movies growing up were always Disney ones that were immersed in song and bursting with expression.

As I got older I began to watch musicals, my all time favourite being Hamilton by Lin-Manuel Miranda. The story of the performance is showcased with a modern twist and the songs throughout always made me want to sing along and learn every line…which I ended up doing after watching a few times. The song My Shot is a 6 minute masterpiece, the song took 1 year to complete.

The community that these shows create is another reason why I fell in love with them. Discovering that other people had the same interests as me was a comforting feeling and as a teenager definitely gave me a place in which I felt like I belonged.

How do my personal values shape my practice?

I hope for access to the arts, excellent opportunities and supportive vocational pathways, for all performers. I value equity in performing arts communities and believe everyone should be able to have access to express their creativity and celebrate diversity.

I have worked with all different kinds of groups over the years and the best ones are the ones where everyone is authentically themselves. If the performing arts push for a certain look or ideal type of performer it would be a very boring and repetitive world, as performers we need to strive for inclusivity and diversity to ensure we are uplifting as well as showcasing all performers!

How will my artistic philosophy inspire me as a teacher one day?

I have always loved to help others and enjoyed helping people learn new things and reach new goals. I knew from a young age I wanted to be a teacher. I started this journey by studying performing arts at GCSE and BTEC Level 2 and 3 receiving distinction*.

This gave me the necessary qualifications to study performing arts at degree level. I began my degree in the autumn of 2023 at the University of Bedfordshire. I am currently in my third year and ready to move on to gaining my Post Graduate Certificate in Education. I tailored my entire degree journey with the idea of becoming a teacher always in mind.

Vision statement

"As a performer I aim to entertain my audience and allow them to escape the issues that are crowding there mind and enter a state of joy and understanding, as a teacher I aim to make all students feel heard and given the opportunity to showcase their unique talent".
